I created and taught this narrative writing sequence for Year 6, However, a colleague tells me it also worked very well for Year 5 .
Pupils wrote a story based on a spooky model text called 'The Temple'. This unit is a great opportunity for showing tension, atmosphere, character and a setting description. Pupils LOVED it! They produced some excellent work, which was used as evidence in Year 6 writing moderation. I produced detailed planning for this writing sequence and a 42 slide PowerPoint, which guides pupils through the learning stages. Read more about it HERE. |

Suitable for Years 3 to 6, abstract noun poems are one of my favourite forms of poetry to teach children. They are really easy for kids to compose and always produce some great pieces of writing.
My resource pack includes: a beast of a 28 slide PowerPoint with grammar work on nouns for pupils to do on whiteboards, two abstract noun poems, a printable planning sheet and also planning for teachers. Read more about it HERE. |

If you're looking for a primary story writing idea, this lesson sequence is for you! I have taught it in Year 3 but colleagues have also taught it with older children and had fantastic results! I've included a resource pack with a PowerPoint, planning etc at the bottom of this page.
This short animated film called Oktapodi is completely engaging, fast paced and action packed. It contains no dialogue and the vivid animations make it a super stimulus for a great piece of writing. Watch it HERE before you continue. |

I absolutely love this poetry teaching sequence - it has all the ingredients I value in a writing cycle: creativity, independence, imagery and it's huge on editing. The whole sequence can be done in around three lessons and more able pupils (who write fast) can just do another poem for a different colour.
The unit is based on the model text 'Green' see HERE. The teacher analyses the poem and its features and takes the class through the writing and editing process step-by-step. This poetry unit can be accessed by ages 7 up to 11 years old |
